The simplest way to correct the twisted or warped floor joist is to add a block between the two joists where the block should be the same size as the joists or slightly smaller. By any chance, if the joist is not vertical, you might need to put the block at an angle and then pound it up in to straighten the joist.
Another way to fix the joist is by adding a diagonal bridging between the twisted joist and the ones on either side of it. What you need to prepare for this fixing method are the followings…
- Hammer
- Long Nails
- A Saw
- 16 or 18 inch long scraps of 2-x-2s or 2-x-4s (depending on how far apart the joists are)
You can also buy the ready-made bridging at your home improvement store in either wood or metal. After you ready your tools, what should you do? It is this…
- Saw the 2-x-2s to the appropriate size
- Bevel the edge by sawing the corner off at an angle. Please note that the bridging has to fit into the corner between the joist and the subfloor
- Now, you should nail one end of the 2-x-2 to the sound joist, then the other side of the bridge to the twisted joist
- Bridge the gap between the joists on the other side
- Repeat the above steps if needed on other twisted joists.
These are the procedures where you could fix your twisted or warped floor easily. Please note that no matter how you are going to fix the floor, you should remember all the safety rules as it is important to pay extra attention especially if you are dealing with saw and hammer.
Warning: Please do not neglect the above procedure if you want to fix the twisted floor joists yourself.
